What Causes My Chest and Abdominal Pain?

Chronic abdominal wall pain and chest pain is a poorly recognized clinical problem, despite being an important element in the diagnosis and evaluation of abdominal and chest discomfort. Accurate diagnosis and treatment requires an understanding of the possible mechanisms responsible for your pain, as well as a recognition of typical patterns and clinical presentations.

Your abdomen is an anatomical area bounded by the lower margin of your ribs and diaphragm above, your pelvic bone below, and your flanks on either side. Although abdominal pain can arise from the tissues of the abdominal wall that surrounds the abdominal cavity, the term abdominal pain generally is used to describe discomfort originating from organs within the abdominal cavity. This can include the stomach, small intestine, colon, liver, gallbladder, spleen, and pancreas. Abdominal pain and chest pain can range in intensity from a mild stomach ache to severe acute pain, and this type of pain is often nonspecific and can be caused by a variety of conditions. Very commonly, abdominal wall pain is related to cutaneous nerve root irritation or myofascial irritation. It is typically related to tensing of the abdominal wall muscles, in which case any type of movement is prone to aggravate symptoms.

At Florida Pain and Rehabilitation we have a commitment to delivering the highest standards of care for you. This enables us to advance innovative therapies that both restore your health and improve your quality of life, while delivering superior outcomes to you in the relief of pain from your chest and abdominal region.

How Will You Diagnose and Treat My Chest and Abdominal Pain?

Anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome is one of the most frequent causes of chronic abdominal wall pain and chest pain. Injection of a local anesthetic agent and a long-acting corticosteroid is very effective for most patients and can help to confirm the diagnosis. As part of your treatment, we will review your clinical manifestations, discuss your diagnosis, and develop a treatment plan for the management of anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome. Effective treatment generally consists of several anesthetic injections, sometimes combined with corticosteroids. Just such an approach generally yields persistent pain relief in two-thirds of patients, with the beneficial effect of significant and lasting pain relief.

Chronic pain emanating from the abdominal wall is frequently unrecognized or confused with visceral pain, leading to extensive misdiagnosis. Unfortunately, the abdominal wall is often neglected as a cause of chronic abdominal pain, which can result in prolonged suffering and unnecessary pain. The professionals at Florida Pain and Rehabilitation are chest and abdominal pain and abdominal wall pain authorities, and you can count on us for high quality, individualized pain management services if you are suffering from acute or chronic pain.
