NCV Test in Ocala, FL

With locations in Lake City, Ocala, and Lady Lake, top-rated Florida Pain and Rehabilitation Center is one of the state’s leading pain management treatment centers. We help patients in Gainesville, The Villages, and the surrounding communities effectively diagnose their pain with an NCV test to detect destroyed or damaged nerves that could be at the root of any pain-related issues.

How will NCV Tests Help to Bring Me Pain Relief?

Used to diagnose nerve damage and evaluate diseases of your nerves or muscles, the Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) study measures the speed of electrical signals throughout your nervous system. Performed on an outpatient basis, the NCV test can determine whether or not a patient has nerve damage, which is critical information for accurately diagnosing the cause of numbness, tingling, or pain symptoms.

During this test, your nerve is electronically stimulated, and the electrical impulse downstream from the stimulus is then measured. The NCV study helps diagnose destroyed or damaged nerves and is a tremendous tool for targeting problems and finding solutions to provide the most effective treatment for your pain.

How Will You Diagnose and then Treat My Pain with an NCV Test?

During the test itself, electrodes will be attached to specific parts of your body where symptoms are present. Two surface electrode patches are placed over the nerve being tested. One stimulates the nerve with mild impulses of electricity, and the second patch records the response to the stimulation.

Each time the stimulator is activated, a signal will travel through the targeted nerve. Once that signal passes through the nerve, it is detected by the electrodes, which provide a precise measurement of the strength and speed of each nerve’s response to the direct stimulation. By sending these mild electric currents through your body and measuring their speed, the resulting data will allow the pain specialists at Florida Pain and Rehab to accurately diagnose nerve dysfunction, and better understand how to effectively treat it.

The distance between electrodes and the time it takes for electrical impulses to normally travel between electrodes are used to calculate the speed of impulse transmission, which is your nerve conduction velocity. A decreased speed of transmission indicates nerve disease or abnormal pressure on the nerve. Once the study has been completed, the electrodes are gently removed, and you are free to leave. Often an EMG, or electromyography is also performed simultaneously with a nerve conduction study.
