What Causes My Pain from Radiculopathy?

Any irritation or inflammation of a nerve resulting from disc herniation is called a radiculopathy. Radiculopathy can cause you pain, tingling or a numbing sensations of weakness at the site of your affected nerve. It can strike in any portion of your spine, although most cases occur in your lower back. When it occurs in the lower back, it is called lumbar radiculopathy, but if it is present in your neck, it is known as cervical radiculopathy.

The cause of radiculopathy is pain or compression in your nerves brought about by their displacement. This can often occur because of a disc herniation, triggering the compression of a nerve. It may also be due to bone spurs from osteoarthritis, or a thickening of surrounding ligaments. Diabetes is another reason why people develop radiculopathy, due to a reduction in blood flow to the nerves of the spine. Finally, radiculopathy may also result from inflammation due to trauma. In all of those instances, the amount of space in your spinal canal is reduced, causing compression in the exiting nerve and leading to intense symptoms of pain.

How Will You Diagnose and Treat My Pain from Radiculopathy?

Your radiculopathy symptoms can vary widely depending on the affected nerves, although typical symptoms of radiculopathy are pain, numbness, and tingling sensations in your legs or arms. Patients commonly experience localized pain in the neck or back as well, causing discomfort leading down your lower extremity. Some patients can experience hypersensitivity to just a gentle touch, causing pain in the affected area.
